Chin Enhancement (Genioplasty)

Genioplasty

Drs. Holmes and Sclar perform genioplasty in order to reshape the chin and jowl area. Appearance can be improved for those people who are dissatisfied with the shape and size of their jaw. Genioplasty is a surgical procedure in which the projection or the length of the chin is changed.

Reasons for Surgery

Reasons include changing the size and shape of the chin. Conditions may be natural or due to external trauma to the face. The operation can be performed on all age groups, including teens and the elderly.

Before Surgery

A medical history along with a careful examination is conducted in order to evaluate your general health. We will discuss with you the way your chin can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital Photographs and computer imaging allow Drs. Holmes and Sclar to evaluate the appropriate procedure to achieve the desired results.

Method Of Surgery

Surgery is usually performed under IV Sedation or general anesthesia. The surgery is done through the mouth to avoid any noticeable scars. The procedure can sometimes be done by placing a prosthetic implant. In more advanced cases, Drs. Holmes and Sclar, can completely reposition your chin bone in the best possible place, based on the preoperative examination and workup. This is a more technically demanding procedure but often leaves the patient with a more natural appearance (as opposed to the look of the "done" chin) and avoids the need for prosthetic implants. It is not unusual to combine genioplasty with rhinoplasty or orthognathic surgery to improve the profile.

Post-Operative Information

The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people resume their normal activities within a week. Following surgery, a special bandage is sometimes applied to the chin area to aid with a speedy recovery.

Pain is minimal and is controlled with medications. Bruising occurs around the chin, but begins to fade within a few days. Discoloration usually disappears in two weeks.
