Dr. Holmes came to Miami in 1977 accepting a full-time teaching position at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He became a tenured Associate Professor of Surgery and devoted himself to teaching in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics from 1977 to 1985. The Orthognathic Surgery Fellowship program he began and directed at the University of Miami helped train a number of oral surgeons in advanced innovative surgical techniques.
An accomplished surgeon and teacher, Dr. Holmes resigned his full-time academic position at the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1985 to begin his private oral surgery practice in Miami and pursue other professional goals. The oral surgery practice Dr. Holmes founded in 1985 has grown to be known as South Florida OMS, a private group practice involving highly trained Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, providing the full contemporary scope of oral surgical services in two South Florida locations.
Dr. Holmes has published and lectured both nationally and internationally on various oral surgical topics including dental implantology and the orthodontic and surgical correction of jaw growth abnormalities. He has been a regular speaker at continuing education meetings for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and through out Latin America. South Florida OMS regularly provides and makes available continuing education seminars for the dental professionals who refer patients to their practice.
Dr. Holmes is a past president of the Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Miami Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He continues to serve on various national and state committees involving organized Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been a delegate from Florida to the national oral surgery associations House of Delegates since 1993.
Dr. Holmes currently is a Director and Secretary of OMS National Insurance Company, RRG. This company is the malpractice insurance carrier for the majority of oral surgeons in the United States. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of this company, malpractice insurance premiums for oral surgeons have been dramatically reduced and stabilized on a national basis.
Handling anxiety-producing experiences like the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, uncovering of unerupted teeth, extractions, and biopsy procedures in our state-of-the-art facilities utilizing outpatient general anesthesia, IV sedation, and local anesthesia techniques is especially fulfilling for Dr. Holmes. He looks forward to visiting with happy patients at their postoperative visit.
He also is proud of the orthognathic and reconstructive jaw surgery practice he has developed. Dr. Holmes routinely receives referrals from around the state and also from South America and Latin America for these specialized services. He has performed over 2,000 orthognathic procedures and regularly provides these services in an outpatient setting.
Dr. Holmes and his wife are third generation Californians. They both love South Florida and are involved in many community associations, service organizations, and volunteer activities. Their son is in business in the Miami area and their daughter is a premed student at Florida State University. Ask Dr. Holmes about his and his wifes transition to Miami and South Florida.
Dr. Holmes truly loves his profession and his involvement with organized Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
